Akyaka/
Gökova is 30 km.to Muğla and 32 km. to Marmaris. At northern
Gökova the mountains rise up to 1000 m. and
are covered by forest. Eastern Gökova, a unique grassy
plain comes between Kadın and Akçapınar streams, where fresh
water comes from. Whereas, Akyaka was a district previously
dependant upon Kozlukuyu ( Gökova ) village where there are ramshackle houses around İskele (quay), it became a mukhtar in 1972 and
a municipality in 1992. |

Akyaka
has become a fast-developed tourism centre since 1970. It was included in
the first “Environment Protection Zone “ in 1988. Akyaka
is a tourism heaven with its mountains covered by the forest,
streams like aquariums, its sea, camping, abundant history, wood covered houses with architectural characteristics . In
short, Akyaka is the place to live .

GÖKOVA'S
PLACE
IN TURKISH HISTORY
The
region was under Turkish leading at the end of the 13th
century. Karia becomes Menteşe region during that period,
Cova Çukuru was known as Gökabad and Gökova. Islam had come
to the vacinity with the coming of Turkish people after
Christian religions and other religions. Also, the
Turkish language became the permanent language after Greek and
Karian languages. Gökova was in the administration of
State owned Menteşe with the capitol Milas; Then it was added
to the land of Ottoman Empire in 1420s. Muğla became the
Capitol city and Ula became the centre of the borough.. The
most important event during the Ottoman Empire was the
passing of Kanuni Sultan Süleyman through our region with his
land forces to conquer Rhodes. The coming of the forces was in July 1522, and they
left in January 1523. 1970 was the beginning of
tourism in Muğla – Marmaris .
